Product Highlights

With a packed size of 19" x 5" and a feather-light trail weight of 2 pounds 11 ounces, the Sierra Designs Light Year 1 is an ideal choice for lightweight devotees and solo backpackers. Best of all, despite its light weight, the Light Year 1 hasn't sacrificed the construction or features necessary to make it a functional 3-season option.

The Light Year 1's 20 square feet of interior space is designed for the solo hiker. Sewn-in pockets serve as interior gear hideaways and a small vestibule provides additional sheltered storage space outside of the main tent body.

DAC Featherlite NSL aluminum poles provide the Light Year 1 with support and stability. Sierra Designs non-rotating Elbow connectors increase the frame strength by locking the poles in place at the point of suspension. Sturdy, streamlined Ultralight Clips help to keep trail weight to a minimum. Reflective guy lines help to further secure the Light Year 1 and provide visibility when returning to your tent after dark.

The Light Year 1's SuperSeal Floor has a raised, taped perimeter that maintains a tight pitch and guarantees waterproof protection. Environmentally-friendly PVC-free seam tape protects the interior of the Light Year 1 from moisture and precipitation.

A custom-fit footprint (sold separately) is available to further protect the floor of your Light Year 1 from mud, ground water and sharp objects such as rocks and pine needles.

Likes: Fantastic design. Although this tent is not freestanding and the setup is unusual (you stake it all out first, then add poles and fly), it's very spacious and holds up well in bad weather. I've endured stormy nights with high winds on the coast of Wales, and the Lightyear 1 worked great.

Dislikes: At around 3 pounds, it's definitely not an ultralight tent.

Likes: It is a lightweight and somewhat roomy solo unit. It packs easily and is more affordable than most ultralight tents. It appears to be more practical for a budget-minded, smaller sized person who is only using it for a few days at a time in ideal conditions.

Dislikes: To be fair I'm measuring this tent against a Hubba 1 and the Big Agnes Fly Creek 2. In comparison, the Light Year 1 is flimsy and requires the stakes to be set before raising the poles. For me that's a time waster and a hassle. The Big Agnes and Hubba tent poles stand upright without the stakes. Not so with this tent. Also, it feels as though it will collapse under it's own weight if one or two stakes were to come loose from the ground. The entrance exposes a large portion of the tent's interior to the elements when opened. If you are a large person who relies on your tent for long treks in less than ideal conditions you'll be wise to spend the extra money on a Hubba or Big Agnes tent.
