Product Highlights

Employing a unique design concept that offers flex, fit and support along with a multi-fit footbed system and GORE-TEX weather protection, the Salewa Men’s Hike Trainer GTX hiking boot offers comfort and performance for long day hikes or lightweight backpacking trips.

A nubuck upper with a protective suede rand at the sides of the boot and rubber reinforced toes and heels give the Men’s Hike Trainer GTX the durability you’ll need for long day hikes on multi-surface trails. GORE-TEX XCR keeps water out of the boot while allowing your feet to breathe.

Salewa's footwear is based on their Three Functions System which consists of Fit, Flex and Support. The Fit Function creates an anatomical fit that works with the asymmetry of the human foot and results in less movement in the heel of the boot, less rubbing and less potential for blisters. Salewa's Flex Function allows the collar of the boot to move more independently from the upper which results in unbeatable ankle flex for an agile stride and better performance on the trail or on rocky slopes. When moving sideways on steep slopes your ligaments are often pushed to their limits. Salewa's Support Function provides full ankle support while still offering freedom of movement.

The connection of the Salewa "Y" to the 3D lacing spreads the lacing force onto the whole foot and controls the movement of the heel better while the lace-to-toe design allows users to get a more custom fit at the toe of the boot. The Men’s Hike Trainer GTX also offers a unique footbed that allows individual adjustment of the fit through Salewa's Multi-Fit foot bed system. The bottom layer can be easily removed from this two-part foot bed to increase the volume within the boot for wider feet or left intact for medium to lower volume feet. An EVA midsole makes for flexible support underfoot and the Vibram Hike Approach outer sole provides the ideal mixture of durability and grip for on-and-off trail travel.

Sold in pairs, the Salewa Men’s Hike Trainer GTX hiking boot is available in full and half sizes.

Likes: The workmanship, the fit (once I started using a lighter-cushion socks), and the comfort. Reasonably comfortable right out of the box, with no real break-in period required. The first time I used them outside was on 3-mile hike on a local fire-road-type trail, and I had no issues, and I've since used them on longer hikes (up to 10 miles). They support my ankles well without being too constricting, the grip on the road is good, on hard surfaces and loose, and when I used them during the recent rains here in California, they worked well also. My first Salewa boot, and I won't hesitate to buy another pair when the time comes.

Dislikes: Price and, initially, fit: Way too tight on my feet the first time I tried them on --almost sent them back, in fact, because I thought it was a toe box issue (these boots have a narrow toe box, with laces almost to the toe). But tried them on again a few days later and they fit great, and I realized it was my socks: Heavy-cushion the first time, "light-cushion" the second time. Made all the difference in the world. These are the first boots I've used that are a little sensitive when it comes to sock cushioning, but that's really the only issue I've had with them so far. Regarding price, they're a little on the pricey side, but worth it for what you get, particularly if they're on sale.
