Product Highlights

Employing a unique design concept that offers flex, fit and support along with a multi-fit footbed system and GORE-TEX weather protection, the Salewa Alp Trainer Mid GTX hiking boot offers technical performance, lightweight comfort for long day hikes or lightweight backpacking trips.

A full suede leather upper combined with Kevlar protection rands around the base of the boot, toe and heel, offer excellent protection on rough and rocky surfaces while GORE-TEX XCR keeps water out of the boot and allows your feet to breathe.

Salewa's footwear is based on their Three Functions System which consists of Fit, Flex and Support. The Fit Function creates an anatomical fit that works with the asymmetry of the human foot and results in less movement in the heel of the boot, less rubbing and less potential for blisters. Salewa's Flex Function allows the collar of the boot to move more independently from the upper which results in unbeatable ankle flex for an agile stride and better performance on the trail or on rocky slopes. When moving sideways on steep slopes your ligaments are often pushed to their limits. Salewa's Support Function provides full ankle support while still offering freedom of movement.

The connection of the Salewa "Y" to the 3D lacing spreads the lacing force onto the whole foot and controls the movement of the heel better while the lace-to-toe design allows users to get a more custom fit at the toe of the boot. The Alp Trainer Mid GTX also offers a unique footbed that allows individual adjustment of the fit through Salewa's Multi-Fit foot bed system. The bottom layer can be easily removed from this two-part foot bed to increase the volume within the boot for wider feet or left intact for medium to lower volume feet. A Triple density, microporous rubber midsole creates stiff yet flexible support underfoot, creating better performance when climbing steep, rocky slopes and the Vibram Hike Approach outer sole provides the ideal mixture of durability and grip for on-and-off trail travel.

Sold in pairs, the Salewa Alp Trainer Mid GTX Hiking Boot is available in full and half sizes.

  • Troy C. Knightstown IN

Likes: Good looking shoe, lots of options to lace.

Dislikes: The shoe does not have a wide toe box at all, very narrow boot. Also there is not much give/spring in the heel so you feel a lot when you are hiking on rocks. After wearing it for a week with thick cushioned wool socks I ended up with blisters on my little toe. If you have narrow feet I would give this a try, but I will be returning.

  • James A. Blakeslee PA

Likes: I've taken these boots out for several weeks and my feet come back happy every single time! They're as confident kicking out miles in a day through rolling hills as they are scrambling up boulders. Bottom line is, buy these, apply to feet, and go. You won't regret it. -

    Dislikes: Nothing yet

  • Chad B. Red Lion PA

Likes: It was advertised 100% blister free. And so far so good. Went on a 10 mile AT hike got a little bit of a hot spot on my one toe but no blister.

Dislikes: A little narrow. I normally wear 9 but ordered 9.5. Still seemed tight but tried different lacing techniques seemed to fit fine.

  • Anonymous Backcountry Edge Customer

Likes: Terrific boots. Lightweight. Great fabrics and build. Low profile but lots of support.

Dislikes: The width. Not really something I don't like. These boots fit slightly narrow ... so it depends on you foot width.

  • Erik T. Clive IA

Likes: These boots felt like beefed up running shoes which I really liked. It seemed like they would be very comfortable to wear all day but also still provide some stability when carrying larger loads. With other Salewa boots they have to fit your feet.

Dislikes: Although I like the concept of these boots they didn't fit my feet at all. After wearing for a short period of time I could feel a blister starting to form. I personally like the mountain trainers much better. Thank you Backcountry for being great to work with!!

  • Scott R. Erie PA

Likes: Very rugged and lightweight boots. Very comfortable walking and good traction.

Dislikes: Got a hotspot/small blister on the heel and it took multiple tries of adjusting of the lacing to get the boots to where they don't rub. Followed the advice of other online reviews and it seems that the problem is fixed.
