Product Highlights

Reflecting Ruff Wear's commitment to complete adjustability and a customized fit, the Ruff Wear Approach Pack enables your four-legged hiking companion to accompany you on your adventures with his very own pack in tow! Two large zippered saddlebags provide ample room for food, water, bowls and other gear.

Constructed of durable ballistic nylon, the Approach Pack's low-profile saddlebags are designed to withstand the rigors of backcountry activity, provide storage space and keep the load comfortably balanced. A weight-forward design makes certain that the load is ideally situated to avoid hampering your dog's natural gait. A contoured, athletic cut provides your dog with a close-fitting performance fit. Eliminating the need for extraneous straps, a patented Web Master spider-web harness provides superior fit, load-carrying stability and support. The interior lining of the harness utilizes EVA closed-cell foam to cushion the weight and protect your dog from excessive rubbing and hot spots. Your dog is further protected from rub by a fleece-lined covering that wraps around the Approach Pack's woven straps. Reflective trim adds visibility and makes the Approach Pack easy to spot at night.

Side release buckles and sturdy hardware make the Approach Pack easy to take on and off and provide multiple adjustment points to ensure that your dog enjoys the best possible fit. An integrated handle on the top of the Approach Pack allows you to easily carry the pack when your dog isn't wearing it and serves as an assistance handle when your dog needs a helping hand for on-trail obstacles. Waterproof zippers on the saddlebags ensure that the contents of the Approach pack remain dry and secure.

Available in your choice of Blue or Green color options, the Ruff Wear Approach pack is also available in a large array of sizes. Please see the provided sizing chart for measurement instructions and suggested fit. NOTE: For in-between sizes, choose the smaller pack for a lighter load and less bulk.

Likes: Fantastic product. Ordered the Small size, which was perfect for my 35-lb. beagle/lab mix. Make sure you take a few minutes to size the straps and balance the weight distribution, and your dog will be more than happy to wear it.

Dislikes: I haven't experienced this yet, but I could see where the strap adjustments could slip over time. Consider securing them with staples (this would not interfere with taking the pack off, as the pack uses quick-release buckles) to prevent slippage.

Likes: Seems to be pretty tough.
Easy to get on and off.
    Handy loop/handle on top.
    Leash clip is sturdy.
    Bags are plenty big.
Got me lots of attention from other hikers!

Dislikes: Wish the bags some some tougher material on the bottom.
My dog has short legs and was scraping them on rocks pretty regularly.
Didn't seem to do any damage, but not sure about long term.
Had a little trouble keeping it level. Making sure the bags are evenly weighted and all the straps are tight seemed to fix it though.

Likes: At first my 13lb Tibetan Spaniel did not care for this pack, but once on the trail he forgot all about it. It was perfect for carrying his little essentials and I was able to fit his poop bags, leash, treats, and toys quite easily. It is really well made, way more beefed out than my little dog will ever need, but I think it will easily last a lifetime. Great adjustability and light weight, perfect for us. We did try some other packs and found this one to be better all around, like Ruff Wear actually tries them out first as opposed to just throwing a product on the shelves. We got a larger one for our Border Collie and it, too, is totally worth it.

Dislikes: Pretty expensive but I should never have to purchase another one as this pack is very tough.

Lots of adjustments for a perfect fit.

Likes: This backpack is great. The material is very durable, it fits well and I love the handle and the metal clip on the top. I'm really impressed with the quality and just ordered a Ruffwear leash and collar today for my dogs birthday. This site was also the lowest price I could find both online and in stores and it shipped quickly and on time.

Dislikes: Its not waterproof so whatever you put in the sacks will get wet. My dog was playing in the river and the sacks filled up with water right away. If they were made with a waterproof material this backpack would be perfect.

Likes: This pouch was easy to use with just enough room in each side. So far we have done about 15 miles of moderate to strenuous trails with this bag. Even with his own food, water and extras that he carries it holds the weight well and close to the dogs body. At one point he even managed to get in a tight spot where the bag was wedge in between rocks and he forced it out himself without any harm done to the bag or its stitching. Very well made product thus far!

Dislikes: The only thing that I would do differently next time is getting a bag that detaches from the harness. This would just make things easier when stopping for a short time and you want to give him a rest also but without having to dismantle everything.

Likes: This is a well made sturdy product. I ordered a small for my Staffordshire Bull Terrier, that has a whole lot of energy, like most pit bulls, and it fits superb. It took just a couple of minutes to get her settled into her backpack and we were on our way. She truly looks great. I've owned other backpacks but this one looks a lit more comfortable and its nicely padded. It has an abundance of space. I have yet to go hiking with it, but use it mostly with water bottles to weight her down and get her tired. She LOVES IT! I absolutely recommend this product to anyone with a HIGH energy dog, its truly worth the money.

Dislikes: Nothing, its a great product! May even order the lime green one for my larger pit bull terrier

Likes: Well built and can hold multiple bottles of water

Dislikes: not really a dislike, but it has a different leash attach point from my dog's regular harness so it was a bit awkward for both of us at first

Likes: Fit my little pup like a glove. And sized to his proportios, not too big (and bulky) but big enough to carry his fair share of food. Definitely durable and made strong!

    Dislikes: Nothing so far!

Likes: My other lab is more thick in the chest than most labs, fit him great. Dog can lay down with pack on with no issues.

    Dislikes: nothing works great.

Likes: holds enough food and water for my dogs for 6 days.

Dislikes: It was a little small around the chest. i had to sew to get a proper fit (lab 55lbs slender and in shape)

Likes: Had plenty of room. My dog carried 6 days of dog food plus bowls and still had room to spare. I also really liked the assist handle. It came in handy several times along the trail.

Dislikes: Pack dosn't detach from harness, but I knew that before purchasing.

Likes: It fits like a saddle on a horse. I have to make sure that the weight is even other wise it pull to one side. I realy like it for my dog. She is a medium size dog.

Dislikes: I wish it was a little easier to put on.

Likes: WOW! Not only did this pack, filled w/2 water bottles, give my energetic pit bull the added exercise he needed BUT his demeanor on the walk was calm and proud. Even the other dogs in the neighborhood treat him differently. I'm not kidding! Not the pulling anxious boy he was. Used to be a chore to walk him and now it's a joy. Thank you Back Country Edge and Ruff Wear!

Dislikes: took awhile to adjust the straps for a good fit but luckily my dog was tolerant.

Likes: I bought this pack for our new rescue dog because she needed more of a workout during our walks. She did not mind it at all, right from the first time I put it on her. The straps stay where I adjust them and do not loosen. I like the fact that the weight is higher up, closer to the front, where she is strongest. The pack looks great on her and does not appear to be uncomfortable. She eagerly comes to the pack when I pull it out for a walk.

Dislikes: I don't like is the fact that I have to pull my dog's front leg through one of the straps to put it on and take it off. It is a little bit of a pain, but certainly not a big enough pain to outweigh the pluses on this great pack.

Likes: The adjustable fit. The protective padding to prevent chaffing. Arrived very quickly! Haven't had much opportunity to use it this winter but looking forward to using it more in the spring.

    Dislikes: Nothing yet!

Likes: Great pack. Worth the price for its durability and fit. I've tried other cheaper packs, but they have all fallen apart or caused hot spots on my dog. Sizes run big- be sure to check the sizing chart. My 68 lb rottweiler fits perfectly in a medium.

    Dislikes: Nothing. Love this pack.

Likes: Fits great -- better than any other backpack we tried (and we tried lots). Comfortable -- and its worn almost daily. Durable -- again, worn almost daily. Nice amount of "cargo room." Love all the places to clip to. Like the two leash points.

Dislikes: Wish they offered it in red. Wish it offered a 3rd harness/leash attachment point -- in the front. BUT, these do not hurt performance. This backpack has been absolutely great.

Likes: I ordered a medium based on everyone's reviews on sizing. The medium fit my labradoodle perfectly. The backpack is designed nicely to comfortably fit the dog and the padding on the straps are nice addition. It took a day or two for my doodle to get used to the bag but now, he loves toting it around on walks. He enjoys feeling like he's a working dog and holds his head up high when he has the backpack on!

Dislikes: The pack sits evenly with little weight in it but when I put a water bottle on each side (to help my labradoodle get the extra exercise) the pack goes uneven. The straps need to be re-adjusted every time he puts the pack on. If not, one side will slide down and make the pack uneven.

Likes: I got the medium pack for our 45 pound Siberian Husky, and although it fits, she probably could have fit into a small. It is easy to put on and can hold all we need for a long hike or an overnight trip. I like the padded straps, and they were easy to adjust. The pack itself seems rugged enough to hold up to all the running in the woods that our dog likes to do.

Dislikes: Nothing, it was everything I expected. It just took us awhile to figure out the right balance to keep the weight evenly distributed.

Likes: This pack is worth the extra money compared to the ones you can buy in a pet store. I just purchased the approach pack and it is perfect, exactly what I wanted. I got a medium for my 50 lb pit/lab mix, she could have fit a small or a medium but the medium fits great and I like the extra space it allows, the pouches don't hang too low despite their large size. My dog is able to jump around with no trouble and the pack easily holds two water bottles per side pouch plus lots of other stuff like food. The pouches don't hang too low and they do not restrict my dog's range of movement.

Dislikes: nothing, it's exactly what I wanted

Likes: I purchased a small for my 55 lbs Lab and it fits her very well. This pack is well contstructed and roomy enough for four 16 ounce water bottles each side without a problem. I am very pleased with it and it is well worth the little extra money over the chain pet store backpacks which I had two only lasted me a month each.

    Dislikes: Nothing
