Product Highlights
The Princeton Tec Scout headlamp is ultra-light, and features dual bright white L.E.D.s.
The Scout has a simple multi-function switch to control its 5 output settings. There are three modes of light output (high, medium and low) along with 2 blinking/signaling modes. On high, the output is enough for night hiking on well maintained trails, and the battery-saving low setting can be used for close-up work and reading.
The Scout weighs only 1.6 oz. with batteries. The 4 lithium coin cell batteries (included) last for 24 hours on high and 48 hours on low.
To further reduce weight, the main unit can be removed from the head band and attached to a hat brim or backpack strap.
The Scout is an extremely lightweight headlamp. The weight reduction does come at a price though. There are a few things to consider before purchasing the Scout (or any other ultra-light headlamp).
First, the 2032 lithium batteries are readily available, but they are also rather expensive. With the long 24/48 hour life expectancy, you probably won't have to replace the batteries very often, but you should expect to pay up to $10 or more to replace all 4 batteries.
Second, on the high setting, the light output is adequate for night hiking on well maintained trails, but don't expect floodlight style output. The Scout is best suited for camp set up and close in work.
The Scout is really for those hikers who are looking to shave every ounce possible. It is also a good choice for the occasional backpacker who only goes on one or two trips per year, and only uses the headlamp for an hour or two per night. Under these conditions, the batteries could last several years.
