Updated for 2008! Built to address the needs of younger hikers, the Mountainsmith Youth Scout external frame backpack provides 3356 cubic inches of internal capacity as well as external storage options. Adjustability in the suspension and shoulder straps allows the Youth Scout to accommodate the growth of your young adventurer.

A rugged, lightweight aluminum frame allows the Youth Scout to haul heavy loads. The shoulder straps and waistbelt are constructed of dual-density foam. Firm foam supports the pack weight and provides cushioning under the load while softer foam, up close to the body, gently conforms to the contours of your shoulders and hips. An airmesh fabric backpanel wicks moisture, keeping you cool and dry on the trail. The Youth Scout's suspension system is adjustable fit torso lengths from 13-17 inches in length. An adjustable sternum strap further enhances fit and comfort while side and bottom compression straps allow you to cinch down your load for better stability and maneuverability.

The Youth Scout's large main compartment is reached through a top-loading access point that is tucked under a large hood. The hood includes a zippered compartment that's ideal for stowing maps or a rain cover (sold separately). In addition, multiple large side pockets enable you to organize gear and provide quick and easy access to contents. Pass-throughs behind the pockets allow for hauling of longer items like tent poles or collapsed trekking poles. A zippered front pocket offers another spot to stash gear. A sling located underneath the main packbag allows you to carry sleeping bags that may not fit inside the Youth Scout.

Other features on the Youth Scout include a cord-locked elastic attachment system and webbed daisy-chain attachment points. An internal lined pocket with dual exit ports makes the Youth Scout hydration compatible. Providing valuable assistance in emergency situations, the buckle on the sternum strap doubles as a safety whistle.
