New for 2008! A versatile mountaineering backpack designed for 4-season use, the Mountain Hardwear South Col boasts an array of performance features and a supportive suspension system. With built-in versatility that allows the South Col to be carried in a minimalist set-up, the South Col is an ideal option for climbers or technically-oriented backpackers.

A full molded framesheet and an alloy support rod work in tandem to provide structural stability and effectively distribute the load of the South Col. Dual density foam in the South Col's shoulder straps and fully-padded hipbelt further enhance comfort and aid in load stabilization. Load-lifter straps and a sternum strap serve as additional fit features. A full compression strap system enables you to secure your load and reduce the size of the packbag when you're traveling light. For fast-moving summit assaults, you can remove the framesheet, swap the padded hipbelt for a webbed waist strap (included) and leave the South Col's lid behind. This set-up reduces the overall weight of the South Col to a mere 2 lb 14 oz!

The South Col is comprised of a single main compartment with top entry. The lid of the pack can be removed entirely when not needed. Attachment points abound on the South Col. Maintaining a clean profile and ensuring that you avoid snags while on the move, these attachment features tuck-away when not in use. A rope attachment strap is hidden beneath the South Col's lid. Side wand pockets can be used to carry water bottle or simply keep smaller gear items within arms reach. A lined interior pocket makes the South Col hydration compatible.
