Product Highlights

New for 2009! The pocket-sized, ultra-lightweight Black Diamond Orbit lantern utilizes a full 1-Watt LED bulb to provide ounce-counting backpackers with bright, non-glaring illumination. Despite weighing just 3 oz (not including batteries) the Orbit serves as a powerful, reliable light source.

Working in tandem with dual reflectors and a frosted globe, the 1-Watt bulb provides maximum light output without causing glare. An integrated dimming switch allows for quick and easy brightness adjustability. Operated by 4 AAA alkaline batteries (not included), the Orbit offers 10 hours of burn time. The Orbit is also compatible with Black Diamond’s NRG2 Rechargeable Battery Kit (available in Spring 2009) which cuts down on waste and provides you with a renewable energy source. An integrated battery power indicator lets you know the amount of battery left or the charging status of the NRG2 Rechargeable Battery Kit.

When collapsed, the Black Diamond Orbit is a mere 4 inches in length. At full extension, the Orbit stands at a full height of 5.5 inches, increasing the disbursement of light.

Likes: The Orbit is small, light weight and gives off a lot of light for such a small lantern. It is about half the diameter of a pop can. The dimmer switch feature is very nice and the hooks are cool.

Dislikes: The cost is a bit high but if it lasts a long time it would be worth it.

Likes: A great light--small, lightweight, bright, logical on-dimmer-off switch, easy to hang. I strongly recommend this product.

Dislikes: No negatives.

Likes: Awesome little lantern! So easy to hang with the two metal loops on top. It is nearly weightless and takes up so little space it could be stuffed into the most overpacked bag. The light was strong enough to keep our family-sized tent lit for unpacking/packing and getting ready for bed (even though I had put old batteries in, since I didn't have new ones on hand).
I would recommend this lantern to every hiker/camper and all other outdorsy people!

Dislikes: As I said before, I had put in older batteries, so that might have been why the light didn't last for too long (about an hour per evening for 2 evenings), and it was a bit dimmer than I expected. I'm sure that with new batteries it will be much better and longer-lasting. I guess for a large tent like ours it was a bit small...but it was good enough for us, since we only really need it for before-bed time, and only enough to not stumble in the dark :)
Cannot complain - this really is a great product!

Likes: The Black Diamond Orbit has to be the best backpacking light ever made. Very compact, when collapsed it fits easily into my pack. It’s small enough to carry in my pants pocket. The illumination is fantastic and with the dimmer capability you can go from bright light for seeing around the camp site to a lower setting that lights up my tent very nicely. I can’t tell you how much I love this little jewel. It’s the only lantern/light you will ever need.

Dislikes: none

Review Date: 5/30/2009

Likes: What a cool little light! This lantern has been very handy in the tent (lights up a 40 sq ft tent pretty well). It is also good if you are finishing up tasks as it is getting dark. The built in dimmer works nicely. Ingenious hooks on top makes it convenient to hang on a tent loop without the need for other connectors. Small, lightweight and good battery life.

Dislikes: So far, I like everything about this lantern.

Review Date: 4/6/2009

Likes: I love it, two thirds the weight of my candle lantern and it wont burn down my hammock :). Spare batteries are a lot lighter than extra candles and are a renewable energy source if your using rechargables.

Dislikes: nothing

Review Date: 1/21/2009

Likes: This is compact and lightweight. It is a well thought out design that gives adequate lighting however not quite as good as the Black Diamond Apollo that my son has. If this gave off more light or had longer burn time this would definitely rate 5 stars.

Dislikes: Limited burn time and lower light level than the Apollo lantern.

Review Date: 1/15/2009

Likes: Size!Size!Size! If you like to pack light for any outdoor adventure this is the lantern you need. It is smaller than a can of soup and very light. Great for backpacking, kayaking, car camping or just having and emergency lantern nearby. Battery life is good for its size and output. I also like the fact it runs off of AAA batteries as does my headlamp. This lantern is made for inside of a tent or illuminating a table so don't think it is going to light up your whole camp. It is awesome for what it is and I am very pleased with mine.

Dislikes: Longer battery life would be great.
